The iconic Sky Needle which which was the most prominent landmark at the Brisbane Expo in 1988 will be incorporated into a new development in South Brisbane approved this week by Brisbane City Council.
Lord Mayor Graham Quirk told the Courier-Mail that the needle, originally called the “Night Companion” would sit in front of a 12-storey, 208-unit development.
“The Sky Needle structure has been at its current home at Manning St for 26 years and here it will stay permanently, showcased within a new unit and café development,” Mr Quirk said.
“As part of the development there will be two separate residential buildings and a café, which will be located under the Sky Needle and accessible to the public."“Given the Sky Needle’s prominence as part of the South Brisbane skyline, we’ve ensured the 88m spire will remain taller than the 12 storeys council has approved.”
“Sky Needle won’t be overshadowed and for the first time in years, it will be accessible to the general public through this new project.”
The project by Pradella Developments Pty Ltd will be constructed in two stages, with the first stage to include 105 units and the second stage to include 103 units and the café.
