From State School To Private Hospital In $55 Million Transformation

Transformation of Townsville West State School into the $55m Weststate Private Hospital is now one step closer, with a development application submitted to Townsville City Council to deliver a hub of health services to the local community.

Led by Griffin Group, the development plans to restore and repurpose the heritage listed building into specialist medical suites, with a five storey private hospital proposed to be built on a neighbouring 1,600 square metres of vacant land located on Sturt Street and Ingham Road – less than one kilometre from the CBD.

Griffin Group Director Ben Griffin said the development application put forward would respect and revitalise the beloved heritage building into a thriving health precinct, and deliver long-term health and economic benefits to the whole community.

“A redevelopment of this site presents the opportunity to restore a history-rich building that has been underutilised for more than a decade,” Mr Griffin said.

“The building has played an important role as a school for a number of years and prior to this it served as a first aid post and convalescence ward for armed forces during World War II.

“Our development plans will transform the site into a thriving precinct, one that pays homage to its past, but is a symbol of the future in not only medical care for the community, but as a generator of long-term jobs.

“We are committed to the sensitive adaptation of the building’s heritage fabric, which will be tailored to support low impact services including medical consulting suites, offices and a range of ancillary retail.”

The proposed Weststate Private Hospital sits at the gateway to Townsville’s CBD and will provide 22 hospital beds, four operating theatres, and create approximately 200 jobs during the construction and operational phases. The new health precinct will deliver a range of much needed specialist services including orthopaedics, cardiology, urology and maxillo-facial to the Townsville community as well as supporting services including radiology, pathology, physiotherapy and pharmaceutical services.

“Griffin Group understands the strong presence this building has within the community and aim to deliver a project that embraces the old and the new.”
