Student One Launches World’s Tallest Student Accommodation Tower in Brisbane

Brisbane’s status as a world-class student city is on the rise, with the launch of Student One Wharf Street, the world’s tallest purpose-built student accommodation tower.

Earlier this week Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk launched the 753-bed, 41-storey Wharf Street tower on its rooftop “Sky Lounge”, where future student residents will enjoy sweeping city views.

The $120 million, 122-metre high Wharf Street tower was the latest addition to Student One’s suite of inner-city Brisbane student accommodation residences, with the 742-bed Student One Adelaide Street launched in mid-2016, and the 900-bed Elizabeth Street residence due to open in January 2019.

Designed by architecture firm Arkhefield and constructed by Hutchinson builders, Student One Wharf Street provides student residents with a range of fully air-conditioned single studios, double studios and multi-share apartments.

Student tower surpasses the previous world’s tallest student accommodation, in the northern British city of Manchester, by 11 metres. Student One chief executive Tim Weston said that the achievement of “world’s tallest” was unintentional.

Weston said the premium student accommodation provider was confident that the demand for purpose-built student accommodation would continue to rise as more domestic and international students became aware of its advantages over other accommodation types.

“We’re opening well in time for the influx of 2018 first year undergraduates from around Australia, as well as the arrival of thousands of international students embarking on university, vocational and English language studies, and these students have extremely high expectations,” Weston said.

Weston pointed to the influence of international student attraction to Queensland as a major factor in Student One’s decision to launch in Brisbane.

“International education is worth more than $4 billion annually to the Queensland economy, making it the state’s second largest services export and in Brisbane, its largest services export.”

By 2019, when Student One launches its third student residence, a 900-bed twin-tower residence located on Elizabeth Street in Brisbane’s CBD, the accommodation provider will offer a total of 2,400 beds in the Queensland capital.
