The next stage in the transformation of a former industrial area to the west of the Melbourne CBD has begun.
Work is under way by the Victorian Government on the structure plan for the next part of the Sunshine Precinct that will be developed as affordable housing.
Albion Quarter, about 15km west of the city centre, will be transformed into a precinct offering jobs and affordable homes near public transport under the plan.
It was identified as a priority precinct for development in the State Government’s housing statement.
Community engagement is now under way through events at the Sunshine Campus of Victoria University and Albion Station.
“Planning is under way to transform the Albion Quarter into an area where people can live close to where they work, and we are calling on the local community and industry to have their say,” Victorian precincts minister Colin Brooks said.
The area comprises the upgraded Albion Station, and will cover the area on all four sides of the railway station to the north of Ballarat Road and areas across the suburbs of Albion, Sunshine North and Sunshine.
Local infrastructure to improve amenity and accessibility and to include investment options and liveability are part of the structure plan.
Albion Station will eventually be connected to the Metro Tunnel providing improved access, connectivity and service frequency in 2025 when it opens.
About $20 billion has been invested in infrastructure in Melbourne’s western suburbs so far.
