Online retail giant Amazon is building its 13th logistics centre in Australia, at Melbourne’s Ravenhall.
The logistics centre 20km west of the Melbourne CBD is part of the Dexus Horizon 3023 estate and opposite a fulfillment centre for the world’s largest online retailer.
Amazon said it will spend more than $7 million to open the centre late next year, promising more than 200 jobs once it is operational and 1000 jobs during construction.
It is also plans to create “flexible earning opportunities” with a delivery service, Amazon Flex, aimed at faster delivery to customers in the region.
Dexus is delivering the 8800sq m site for the US giant, its fourth logistics site in Victoria. It has with three others in Melbourne and Geelong.
“Sites like Horizon 3023, Ravenhall industrial estate offer customers premium connectivity enabling them to get packages to customers faster and more efficiently,” Dexus industrial executive general manager Chris MacKenzie said.
The centre will also be near the proposed Western Intermodal Freight Terminal.
Logistics sites are the last point in the delivery process, taking in orders from fulfillment centres and passing them to delivery partners.
“The Ravenhall logistics site enables us to grow our contribution to the local economy through the creation of jobs and flexible earning opportunities and we look forward to building on our strong relationship with the local community,” Amazon Australia operations director Sandra McNeil said.
