ASX-listed Mirvac and Coombes Property Group have announced the shortlist of six architects that will compete to design what may become Sydney’s tallest residential tower.
Fjmt, Bates Smart, Architectus + Ingenhoven, SOM + Crone, Foster + Partners and Wilkinson Eyre are the six architect firms competing.
The two developers teamed up to build a super-tall apartment tower in 2014, with Coombes acquiring the site at 505 George Street, Sydney for $85 million.

Architects in the design competition for the mixed-use tower in Sydney will need to include a retail podium, residential apartments, two childcare centres and a premium hotel. The development carries an expected end value of more than $1 billion.
The joint venture partners have development approval for a 260-metre building on the 4308sq m site.
Mirvac’s head of residential Stuart Penklis says the design competition will ensure the building reflects world-leading design, sustainability and the creation of good, public space that enhances the community.
“Sydney is a global city and George Street is its spine. Together with the CBD light rail and a renewed George Street, the redevelopment of this site will transform this end of town.

Mirvac is currently building apartments in Melbourne and Sydney and while sales in pockets of Melbourne are slower than expected, it has not been hit by the high number of defaults.
The architectural design competition winner for 505 George Street will be announced mid-year.
