The kitchen is often the most important room in a house for a significant portion of prospective buyers, and they are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their preferences.
The trends influencing the global appliance industry were put on show at EuroCucina, Europe’s biennial high-end design and kitchen appliance festival held in Milan.
Focusing on cutting-edge design and kitchen technology, the showcase provided a glimpse into the emerging trends that all developers, builders and kitchen designers must take note of.
Home buyers are becoming increasingly savvy to the impact of European design trends and leading Australian kitchen designers continue to send their teams to review the latest materials, technologies and forms so they can keep in line with global movements.

Smeg continues to be a significant supporter of EuroCucina, providing members of the residential development community the opportunity to sample their latest technological innovations.
And as ever, this edition of EuroCucina brought forward some intriguing focus areas, according to Smeg’s national marketing manager Olivia Anderson.
“It’s becoming increasingly common that Australian buyers look towards Europe as a source of design inspiration and are asking their kitchen to mimic these trends”
--Olivia Anderson, Smeg National Marketing Manager
“We’ve seen a number of themes emerge from this year, focusing on colour, connection, technology and the re-emergence of retro design,” Anderson said.
Here are four key takeaways from this edition of EuroCucina.
While there will always be a space for neutral tones, the theme of EuroCucina was bright, bold colours.
Dominant single tones of red, blue, orange and yellow stood out, especially with Smeg’s Portofino range, inspired by the colours of Italy’s legendary Ligurian ports.
EuroCucina routinely displayed that what is old, is new again. Retro design continues to make an impressive comeback as clients look for something that sets their design apart.
Kitchen appliances continue to meet this trend, with Smeg’s iconic FAB fridge showcasing retro curves and interiors matched with modern conveniences.
Alongside the show’s design focus, technological innovation takes an equally important stage. Providing an easier cooking experience was the core theme for this event.
Smeg’s Thermoseal technology enables users to bring restaurant style-cooking to the domestic kitchen, alongside a focus on larger cavities for growing Australian family needs.
As the modern household continues to build connections with the Internet of Things (the term used for connecting devices to the internet), cooking technology is still catching up with this concept.
The focus on intelligent appliances means that users can control their ovens, dishwashers and even their wine through a centralised app.
Apps will allow the user to optimise their wine storage, set cooking parameters automatically via selected recipes and allow an instant connection between appliance representatives and the user.
