Perth’s waterfront would be transformed under a new council-led vision for the Swan River.
The proposals cover a 2.2km section of the riverfront and includes a public lagoon pool with beaches, ferry stop and the development of the green spaces of Langley Park, with 3000 more trees.
A food and drink precinct as well as potential for hotels and other entertainment areas have been proposed.
It has been reported it will cost $1 billion to redevelop the CBD site.
The city park plans aim to make Perth “one of the most liveable, sustainable and prosperous cities in the world.”
Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas unveiled the concepts on Thursday at a budget briefing. City of Perth councillors then voted in favour of allocating $299.5 million to the plan during a Special Council meeting.
The council will seek public input on the Riverfront Masterplan, after consultants over the next 12 to 18 months. Hassel was engaged in November, 2023 to progress the plans.
The city says that the Perth’s riverfront is “underutilised and its potential as a world class destination has not been fully realised” despite a reported 200 masterplans for the area since 1883.
The latest masterplan provides a vision for the area to guide future planning and budgeting, and to advocate for future funding and involvement by other parties, the council said.
Once the community and other stakeholders have been consulted, submissions will be collated and a final masterplan will be put forward for the council’s consideration.
Zempilas hailed the project as a city-shaper.
“As always, we will engage and consult with our residents, and the wider Perth community, to maximise this opportunity,” he said.
“But our vision is bold and we want our river frontage to be more than a road and a bike path and to rival the river and harbour frontage of other Australian cities such as Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.”
