Fedex has opened the doors of its new freight and logistics distribution centre near Adelaide airport as it moves to meet the surging demand for air freight in South Australia.
Spanning 64,000sq m, the $50-million facility is part of the freight and logistics hub in the Adelaide Airport East Precinct.
The hub will support a 300 per cent increase in packing volume and has expanded one-day delivery services to 130 postcodes across the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula regions.
FedEx Express Australasia vice president Peter Langley said the facility was the largest single express freight hub in South Australia.
“The enhanced capabilities of the new facility will benefit local businesses looking to tap into the international marketplace and supports the growing demand for e-commerce in the South Australia region,” Langley said.
Research has tipped air freight volumes for SA to increase from 58,500 tonnes annually to 146,000 tonnes in 2039.
Adelaide Airport currently has 25 flights per week in and out carrying FedEx Express cargo.
The new facility has 100 per cent LED lighting, water recycling and a skylight.
The masterplan for Adelaide Airport envisions “building the airport of tomorrow” with multiple upgrades to technology, building infrastructure, administration services and overall to every aspect of airport operations.
