Work Begins on Gold Coast Medical Research Centre

The Lumina subprecinct within the larger Health and Knowledge Precinct Gold Coast where several projects are underway.

The next stage of transformation for the former site of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games athletes village is under way.

Developer Northwest Healthcare Properties has begun construction of the RDX Lumina Life Sciences Centre at 15 Nexus Way, Southport, part of the Health and Knowledge Precinct Gold Coast.

The main aim precinct is as a research and development hub plus  accommodation and other uses on the land used for an athletes village for the Games in 2018. 

Lumina is one part of the precinct has has several developments under way within it, including RDX Lumina.

Construction has now begun on the eight-storey life sciences centre with an estimated development value of $154 million. 

It sits on a 0.249ha site and will have a gross floor area of 14,509 square metres.  Completion is scheduled for the third quarter of 2025.

The centre will also have a food and drink outlet, garden, bridge link to the Gold Coast Private Hospital, 180 carparking spaces and 101 bicycle storage spaces. 

On the ground floor will be an imaging area, pharmacy and a food and drink outlet. A breast clinic, consulting spaces, a robotics simulation centre and research centre will be housed on the first floor.

Research spaces will take up the second and third floors while rehabilitation spaces will be on the fourth floor. 

The fifth floor will have more consulting rooms, with clinical trial rooms on the sixth, laboratories on the seventh and a multi-purpose room and kitchenette on the eighth floor. 

DWP and Suters are the architects behind the plans with JLL assisting in leasing the property.  Icon has been contracted as the builder.

Gold Coast Health, Cohort and Griffiths University are all within the larger Health and Knowledge Precinct.

Another 11-storey research centre, North Star, as well as the Gold Coast Life Sciences Centre and the Proxima project are also based within the Lumina area of the precinct.
