How New nbn Product is Powering Smart Cities

The nbn has launched a wholesale product that will allow communities to connect to smart infrastructure and the Internet of Things (IoT) outside of buildings.

Executive general manager of new developments Andrew Walsh said internet retailers could now consider offering nbn Smart Places to its customers.

“This exciting new product allows the nbn network to be connected outside of buildings—anything from traffic lights and CCTV to digital billboards and public Wi-Fi in parks,” Walsh said.

“This is a great example of nbn investing in innovation today to meet the needs of Australian homes and businesses in the future.”

“[The] nbn will use innovative new equipment—miniaturised, ruggedised and reverse-powered network connection devices—that enables the power of the nbn network to be delivered to demanding outdoor locations that just aren’t serviceable using standard equipment.

Increase liveability

People wanted to be able to spend time outdoors while still enjoying the benefits of smart devices, applications and solutions, Walsh said.

“As we see a rapid increase in the planning and development of smart communities, towns, suburbs, precincts and buildings, we know communities and businesses are seeking the very best in connectivity.

“A smart place (or smart cities as they’re often known) integrates technology into the surrounding built or natural environment to increase liveability, sustainability and productivity for residents and businesses.”

Truly connect

Under the nbn Smart Places pilot, nbn collaborated with internet retailers and industry to provide nbn fibre connectivity to 35 locations in three states, Walsh said.

“The trials have been such a success we want to now offer nbn Smart Places across the country.”

“[Our] nbn Smart Places is a great way to create truly connected places when developers are designing their masterplan community and smart cities of the future.”
