Plans for a $900-million hospital in Melbourne’s rapidly expanding western corridor have been revealed.
The new facility at Melton will be Victoria’s first all-electric hospital.
The site, 245A Ferris Road, Cobblebank, is about 40km west of Melbourne.
Scheduled for completion in 2029, the project is a significant public infrastructure investment in one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.
The development will be delivered through a public-private partnership by the Exemplar Health consortium comprising Capella Capital, Lendlease Infrastructure Investments, Invesis, Lendlease, Honeywell, and Compass Group. Western Health will operate the facility.
The hospital will have 274 beds and capacity to treat 130,000 patients annually, including nearly 60,000 emergency department patients.
It will incorporate sustainable design principles inspired by local landscapes and Indigenous cultural considerations.
According to planning documents, the hospital will generate substantial economic activity, creating more than 2400 construction jobs and an estimated 3975 health-related positions in its first operational year.
The hospital will be a part of the Cobblebank Metropolitan Activity Centre (MAC), a planned urban development in the City of Melton, that is positioned to become a significant healthcare, education, and employment hub.
MAC will feature retail and commercial spaces, shops, supermarkets, restaurants, and commercial offices.
New housing is being built in the area, as well as improved road networks, transport infrastructure and enhanced public transport links as part of the $650 Melton Line Upgrade.
The hospital site is near Cobblebank train station and the Western Freeway, and has potential for future expansion with complementary healthcare and support service developments.
