Plans for a $60-million cultural centre in South Perth have been endorsed by the City of Melville Council.
Labelled as the “largest and most significant cultural development” to be undertaken by the city, the project has been designed by Christou Design Group.
It will house the city’s main library as well as gallery and exhibition spaces, a municipal museum and outdoor civic spaces.
The main four-storey building will have floor space of 5080sq m, with room for learning spaces, museum collection storage and meeting rooms.
The project is designed to be a 6-Star Green Star building, and will replace the existing Civic Square Library, forming the focal point of the Melville City Centre ‘“high street”.
The Melville centre has been identified as part of Scentre Group’s $792 -million redevelopment of Westfield Booragoon.
It said that the centre was clearly needed, with more than 70,000 people attending arts and cultural events in the city last year, and half-a-million annual library uses recorded in the jurisdiction.
Construction on the centre is expected to start next year.
Melville was one of eight Perth suburbs that tipped over the $1-million median for house prices earlier this year, driven by its central location close to the coast and the river.
