Blacktown City Council has unveiled plans for the first phase of an $86.9-million transformation initiative for the suburb.
It is a $26.8-million expansion of the Mount Druitt Library and Community Hub, which will be funded by the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants program and aimed at enhancing community facilities in the growing region.
The expansion includes a new two-storey wing for the existing building that will include a children’s library, open-plan study spaces, and meeting and activity rooms.
The facility will span 4193sq m and its multi-function rooms will be able to accommodate more than 250 people.
Blacktown City Mayor Brad Bunting said the “Mount Druitt Library and Community Hub is just the beginning in a transformation that will change how people think about the town centre”.
“There is a growing community here crying out for new places to work, rest and play,” Bunting said.
The expansion includes public domain upgrades such as improved street lighting, new street furniture and additional tree planting, as well as art installations in the town square.
The project forms part of a larger masterplan for the Mount Druitt town centre that includes improvements to pedestrian and vehicle access without diminishing the area’s parkland.
Lacoste and Stevenson Architects has been commissioned for the project.
Previous work by the practice includes collaboration on the $130-million 5 Parramatta Square development with DesignInc and French firm Manuelle Gautrand Architecture.
Two further major projects to “enhance the precinct’s appeal and functionality” are planned under the funding—a substantial upgrade to Mount Druitt Swimming Centre and the construction of a First Nations Cultural Hub.
Construction of the expanded library and community hub is scheduled to begin in early to mid-2026, and completion is slated for late 2027.
