New Tech Bridges Office and Site in Construction

Leading West Australian construction and mining services company RJV is taking technological and business leaps forward with an innovative Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system tailored specifically for the construction industry.

RJV recently implemented Access Coins, a construction-specific ERP platform, after recognising the need for better real-time data and automated workflows in the business.

RJV’s chief financial officer, Gary Ausbruch, said the company had taken big steps forward in their business improvement strategy with the all-in-one Access Coins system.

“Lack of mobile applications was a big pain point for us with our old ERP system,” he said.

“In the past because we’ve lacked connectivity between the office and onsite, transactions were often only occurring when someone was in the office.

“Even something as simple as approving a purchase order was difficult if someone was out of office, which was very frustrating in this day and age.

“But with Access Coins we’re looking forward to being more mobile and integrating Coins with some of our other systems to produce better reporting and business intelligence,” Ausbruch said.

Why construction-specific ERP?

Construction projects are complex, so ERP solutions specifically designed for the construction industry, and features such as project control, field service and equipment tracking, make the transition to a new system much smoother and impact operations less.

Ausbruch said this was a major deciding factor when RJV was choosing to change ERP systems.

“Access Coins is a specialist construction industry ERP, and we could tell straight away it talked the same language as us.

“Our old ERP and other providers we looked at were more generic and we would’ve been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

“But with Coins we could see the system wouldn’t need too much tailoring, enabling us to start using it as soon as possible.”

Ausbruch said the ability for the business to remain operational during the huge task of implementing a new ERP system was vital.

“ERP implementations can be disruptive, and we wanted to minimise the impact on the business operationally.

“With Access Coins, we were able to start using it in a simple and straightforward way, with commercial, financial and procurement going live first.

“There’s a lot more integration we want to do a little further down the track, and we know Coins can grow with us, allowing us to do that,” he said.

The business benefits of ERP

The data paints a clear picture. Construction productivity has barely budged in the past half-century. A 2023 RICS report revealed that 45 per cent of construction companies haven’t seen any improvement in productivity.

The report also highlighted that increased investment in data and digitalisation is the second most important strategy for boosting productivity.

So, it’s no surprise ERP software has emerged as the pivotal choice for construction businesses striving towards digital transformation, unifying disconnected data and systems into one comprehensive system.

Ausbruch said the productivity benefits to RJV were being seen across the business.

“We see the ability for project managers to manage their projects more effectively and to control costs better. To do that in a more efficient and automated way is invaluable.

“Improving time sheeting processes is a big part of it for us too. The ability to move to electronic timesheets and have the information flow through the system is a big step up.

“And the mobile functionality around receipting goods onsite as a delivery occurs is excellent. We now have the ability for an accounts payable invoice to go straight through the system without being touched. It’s a big improvement for us,” he said.

Alex Boury, general manager at Access Construction, said ERP was frequently becoming a strategic driver of business growth for many construction companies.

“The value of ERP, specifically an ERP system that genuinely understands construction, is being put on the table in boardrooms across Australia as a critical component of a business strategy,” he said.

“It’s encouraging to see forward thinking companies like RJV recognising the value of a centralised data source to manage operations and the significant impact it can have on project performance, financial control and ultimately, a business’ bottom line.”
