nbn is set to launch a new training program to up-skill designers and installers in nbn-specific multi technology mix standards and guidelines, in a move that will help developers deliver nbn ready projects earlier by helping to fast-track the certification process and allowing works to commence sooner.
The introduction of the nbn New Developments training program is aimed to help designers, installers and developers work together to help ensure that new development designs and installations are built correctly the first time – minimising project delays.
Currently, approximately 50 per cent of submitted nbn access network designs across Australia require more than one corrective action – whether it’s for pit and pipe or pathway design.
The nbn New Developments training program will further educate designers and installers, reducing the need for any corrections, while aiming to ensure they are delivering consistently high-quality work for every new project.
“There are many veteran and highly skilled practitioners working in the industry today, but over the years training and specifications have changed, so we need to evolve our training programs to meet these new requirements . It’s important that those working in the industry not only have the most up-to date skills possible, but are ready for the future”
--General Manager, Demand Deployment at nbn, Naomi Read
With the implementation of the New Developments training program, developers will be able to access faster design approvals and certification (a Practical Completion Certificate – or PPC) of works, as well as not being charged by nbn for design reviews or required pit and pipe inspections – all benefits that we expect will be in full-effect in 2019.
Developers will also have access to a dedicated list where they can select suppliers based on their completion of the relevant training to help ensure their project isn’t faced with setbacks due to the design and installation of nbn access network infrastructure.
The three modules of the training cover pit and pipe design, Multi-Dwelling Units (MDU) pathway design and pit and pipe installation.
For more information on the nbn New Developments training program, nbn has provided a list of FAQs for both developers and suppliers to see how this program can help benefit their projects and the construction industry.
Designers and installers register online and select from up to three of the training modules; pit and pipe design; MDU (Multi-Dwelling Units) pathway design; and pit and pipe installation.
Design courses are online only.
Installer courses include a combination of online courses and in-person assessments with our training partner, CommTech.
A flat training fee of $500 per individual inc. GST covers your training for three years.
We encourage all professionals who work on nbn new developments to consider completing the training – this includes both SDU and MDU (single-dwelling and multi-dwelling units):
Pit and pipe designers or developers that are competent with AutoCAD and the nbn guidelines.
Pit and pipe installers that are competent installing in accordance with nbn standards.
MDU pathway designers that are competent with AutoCAD and the nbn guidelines.

The New developments – Building Design Guide (NBN-TE-CTO-284) and 194 for pit and pipe outlines all the requirements for pathways and spaces in MDU and MPS sites, including all the information needed to complete the training program.
The program modules will take approximately 20 minutes to complete online. There is a knowledge assessment at the end of the training program.
The assessment is open-book, comprises of 60 questions, and is not timed – we recommend to allow yourself at least 1.5 hours to complete.
Yes. You can pick up your training or assessment where you left off – please be aware that the system will timeout after 10 minutes of inactivity.
An 80% mark is required to pass the training assessments.
You may re-sit the knowledge assessments up to four times. If you fail the training assessment after this, you will have to re-apply for the program – and pay the training fee again. Please note that, in such a case and to the extent permitted by law, the training fee is not refundable.
