Northshore is Queensland’s largest waterfront urban renewal project and Brisbane’s largest riverfront precinct, occupying 304ha of land along the river’s inner-city Hamilton reach.
Ten years into its transformational 40-year development, the $12-billion mixed-use, sustainably designed Northshore has unveiled its future-focused vision as Brisbane’s connected, sustainable and welcoming riverfront precinct.
Northshore is a destination grounded in gathering, connection and celebration with a rich Indigenous, industrial and nautical heritage.
For more than 50 years, the site was a bustling port, with the historic wharves exporting Queensland’s best to the world and welcoming new citizens, service personnel and tourists.
Long before then, the area was known to the Turrbal and Jagera people as Yerrol, a place of cultural significance and ceremony, anchored by a deep connection to water.
From storytelling and placemaking to custom artwork and historical initiatives, the influence and contribution of Indigenous culture continues to shape the Northshore precinct.
With a respectful nod to its past, Northshore remains a place of welcome.
The innovative and future-focused precinct is a fully integrated and sustainable destination where people can live, work, play, create and invest.
The pipeline of opportunities afforded by Northshore’s epic transformation will elevate the city, boost the state’s economy and attract global interest.
When complete, Northshore will welcome 24,500 residents into 14,000 new homes. Offering a range of housing styles, Northshore will provide living options for all lifestyle stages, for homebuyers and renters.
Innovation and technology intersect over 800,000sq m of land devoted to commercial, retail and clean industrial businesses, creating jobs for a projected 25,000 employees.
In 2032, Northshore will welcome the world, hosting around 16,000 Olympic and Paralympic Games athletes and team officials at the main Athlete Village.
After the Games, the Brisbane Athlete Village accommodation will be repurposed into diverse housing with community, recreation and leisure facilities onsite.
Throughout Northshore’s 40-year development, the sustainable and accessible sub-tropical lifestyle precinct will contribute $14.15 billion to Queensland’s economy.
The Queensland government is investing more than $600 million in infrastructure, creating more than 2000 jobs during construction and seeing $125 million of this investment directed towards roads, parks and transport.
Only 6km from Brisbane CBD and 6km from Brisbane Airport, Northshore is a vital link on the Queensland Electric Super Highway and a gateway to major transport infrastructure, including Port of Brisbane and Gateway Motorway.
Key transport nodes, smart road design and cutting-edge technology pave the way for seamless and safe traffic management across pedestrian, cyclist, public transport and private vehicle movement including electric autonomous vehicles, metro gliders and water taxis.
Economic Development Queensland (EDQ)—which has planning responsibility for Northshore—is collaborating with the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Brisbane City Council to develop connected and efficient public transport solutions.
At the core of Northshore’s vision is smart design, sustainability and a drive to deliver a climate-responsive and carbon-positive community.
Northshore’s walkable masterplan connects the precinct and nurtures a city-leading active, liveable and dynamic community.
The development reclaims 2.5km of prime Brisbane riverfront for public use and incorporates 10ha of parklands spanning playscapes, green spaces and a riverfront promenade.
Northshore’s vision to be a Green Building Council Australia-certified 6-Star Green Star community is guided by innovation, including functional measures to cool the precinct, sun-smart initiatives and design strategies across renewable energy, waste minimisation, climate resilience, water conservation and biodiversity management.
EDQ acting general manager Leisl Harris said that EDQ was a passionate and invested custodian of the precinct.
“EDQ is guiding Northshore over this transformational 40-year project to emerge as a vibrant $12-billion mixed-use city precinct,” Harris said.
“Queensland’s largest waterfront urban renewal project plays a defining role in shaping the future of Brisbane and setting a benchmark for innovative and sustainable development and EDQ is committed to creating a prosperous, liveable and connected community.”
