The winners of the 2020 New South Wales Architecture Awards has been announced, with a theme of collaborations recognised across a number of projects.
Across 13 categories, 41 awards were given including named awards, architecture awards and commendations from 122 shortlisted projects.
Due to the continued Covid-19 related restrictions, the winners were announced via YouTube by the NSW Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects on Friday 3 July.
The NSW Architecture Medallion, honouring an exemplary project across all awards categories, was taken out by Durbach Block Jaggers with John Wardle Architects for their Chippendale-based gallery and performance space, Phoenix Central Park.
NSW Architecture Awards chair Peter Poulet said the project showcased the best of collaborative outcomes and is also recognised for its strong use of material and form.
“Having been given an open invitation to design something exceptional, the architects have joined forces to seamlessly intersect design with the visual and performing arts,” Poulet said.
“The single yet multifaceted and dynamic project creates an immersive experience for those inside while being a striking architectural marker on the outside.”
Jurors were also quick to highlight Verve Residences, a multi-residential Newcastle development by CKDS Architecture with Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects.
The project was awarded the Aaron Bolot Award for Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing, as well as the Blacket Prize for design excellence in a regional context.
A new category was also added to the 2020 program, the People’s Choice Awards For Life in 2020, created by the NSW Chapter in response to the ways Covid-19 has altered our relationship to housing, workplaces and the public domain.
The new category marked the first time the public was able to have its say in the state awards.
