$1.3 Billion NYC Tower Inspired By A Trash Can?

While inspiration can come from almost anywhere for architects and designers the idea behind 432 Park Avenue was especially unusual.

New York City's new luxury condo tower and tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere was inspired by a trash can.

The Rafael Vinoly design is 1,396 feet tall and covered with a gridded facade which Vinoly

says, makes the building "read like a constant object."In a lecture uncovered by 

The Real Deal last year, 432 Park's co-developer Harry Macklowe, Macklowe Properties Chairman, revealed the simple object that has inspired the US$1.3 billion tower.

Speaking at the Real Estate and Finance lecture Mr Macklowe said, "If you look at it very carefully you see what we call push-pull between negative and positive. So that was very inspirational to Rafael Vinoly and I."

Mr Macklowe continued to praise Vinoly's design telling The Real Deal ,"We have not had anything other than the endorsement of the building I think because some other tall buildings that have been built have not been as attractive, I guess we've had a little bit of a free ride."The building's penthouse has also made headlines costing its buyer a staggering $95 million, making it the sixth most expensive apartment in the world.
