Fifty years after the idea was first floated, Ocean Reef Marina on Perth’s northern beaches is moving forward, adding landmark sustainability certification.
Construction of the 1000-home DevelopmentWA project began in March of last year to create a marina and community that includes the city’s first coastal pool and protected man-made beach.
Sixty-eight residential lots and three apartment sites are due to go to market early next year, which is also when the beach, pool and lobster-themed playground are expected to open.
There is also 12,000sq m of commercial space planned for the $272-million precinct.
This month it became the first marina development in Australia to receive full EnviroDevelopment certification.
The smart-city project about 30km north of the Perth CBD will have one of Perth’s first large-scale renewable energy microgrids to be deployed in a development of this kind.
About 80 per cent of construction waste is being diverted from landfill for roads, carparks and drainage.
WA Limestone and Italia Stone Group JV completed the southern sea wall in mid 2023. This was followed by the Georgiou Group beginning the $107-million stage one works last year.
Ocean Reef Marina’s complete build-out is scheduled to complete around 2036, adding the 79ha precinct to the City of Joondalup, the council that created the concept plan.
DevelopmentWA chief executive Dean Mudford said it was a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible development.
“It will offer a vibrant blend of housing, thriving local businesses, and year-round attractions built on a strong foundation of environmental sustainability,” Mudford said.
The project has been on the cards since the 1970s when it was raised to meet demand for boating facilities, creating a new harbour, tourist destination and homes.
