Two down, three to go—another station on Melbourne’s Metro Tunnel project has been completed.
Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announced construction of Parkville Station has completed, as work continues on the final three stations on the Metro Tunnel line.
The station at the Parkville Health and Education Precinct is 32m below Grattan Street, with entrances outside the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the University of Melbourne and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
There will also be a pedestrian underpass under Royal Parade.
The station has a 54m-long steel-and-glass canopy over the concourse, and a new tram stop on Royal Parade.
It took six years to build the station and its four entrances as well as installing its 16 escalators and seven lifts.
Melbourne artist Patricia Piccinini created the artwork Vernal Glade inside the main entrance of the station.
The Victorian Government has invested more than $233 million in its Budget this year to prepare for the opening of the Metro Tunnel in 2025, a year ahead of schedule.
“This year’s Budget investment will get the Metro Tunnel ready for kick-off—delivering the staff, station infrastructure and customer information on the ground to support day one and beyond,” Victorian transport infrastructure minister Danny Pearson said.
Test trains have travelled 18,000km so far through the tunnels.
The Metro Tunnel will create a direct rail line from Sunbury north-west of the Melbourne CBD to Cranbourne and Pakenham in the south-eastern suburbs, allowing more space in the City Loop.
