Malaysian-based developer UEM Sunrise has filed plans for the first of its residential developments on the former home of an iconic Perth sporting ground.
The developer has lodged plans for lot one and two of its site where Subiaco Oval once stood, 3.3km west of Perth’s CBD.
The company said it was seeking approval for three mixed-use residential buildings on lots one and two that make up the 4930sq m site at The Oval, one of several precincts in the 35ha Subi East neighbourhood.
Planned for lot one are two towers of 25 and 35 storeys, while a 10-storey residential building is proposed for lot two.
There will be 340 apartments across the three buildings. Twelve per cent will be affordable housing.
“The proposed design for the mixed-use residential precinct will promote communal interaction through well-curated spaces, [and] 400sq m of retail space on the ground floor of lot 1, which permeates into gardens and landscaping that augment the public facilities at The Oval site,” the developer said.
UEM Sunrise said it was targeting a five-star Green Star Buildings v1.0 certification for the development.
The developer acquired the lots for $22.185 million in August, 2023.
Pending approval, construction is planned to begin in 2026.
The Oval is the first to be developed at Subi East, which will provide homes for 4000 residents as well as shopping, dining and entertainment options, according to the WA Government.
The urban regeneration project also aims to deliver a range of community amenities, including public open space, sports facilities and play areas.
Subiaco Oval opened in 1908 and closed in 2017 after Perth Stadium at Burswood opened.
The demolition of the Subiaco stadium was completed in November, 2019. The oval playing surface was retained as part of the school grounds of the Bob Hawke College.
The 43,500-capacity oval served as the home ground of the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Dockers AFL clubs in its later years, and was also used as a live music venue, hosting acts such as AC/DC, Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac, U2 and Adele.
UEM Sunrise operates in Singapore, Australia, Canada and South Africa as well as its home nation, Malaysia.
It is part of the UEM group of companies, an investment holding company and a wholly owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Berhad, the sovereign wealth fund of Malaysia, and headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.
