The rejuvenation of the Brunswick Street Mall in Brisbane's Fortitude Valley has officially broken ground this week.
The project is the brainchild of Brisbane City Council, in association with Fortitude Valley Economic Development Board.
The six month construction phase began this week with Lord Mayor Graham Quirk the first to take shovel in hand and transform The Valley's heart into a day and night cultural entertainment and dining hub.
The redevelopment is designed to meet the needs of the community and have significant implications for future economic development.
PLACE Design Group was commissioned to head the project commissioned to head the project as lead for urban design and landscape architecture.
The Mall is well known for its active nightlife and live music; but has been criticised as for its lack of daytime activity.
The rejuvenation project is aimed at transforming the current daytime thoroughfare into a day and night cultural entertainment and dining hub.
Shaun Egan, Design Manager at PLACE Design Group is mainly concerned with fixing the imbalance between day and night experiences and bringing the equilibrium back.
The key components to the rejuvenation project include provision of improved art, artscape zone creation, promotion of better tree growth and pod activity generators.
Peter Edwards from
Archipelago has partnered with PLACE Design Group to manage the architectural concepts of the pods.
The pods and diverse zones are designed to support the multiple formats of entertainment scheduled for the area throughout the year.
There will also be a strong focus on maintaining and improving The Mall’s connection to China Town.
