A 1960s-era Gold Coast motel has been scooped up by Malaysian conglomerate MRCB as it eyes a second Glitter Strip development.
The company has acquired the Sundale Motel at 20 Queen Street, Southport, and is plotting a “high-quality” apartment project.
It comes on the back of MRCB’s $500-million 26 Vista project at Surfers Paradise, which has been launched to market.
MRCB International is a wholly owned subsidiary of the publicly listed urban property and infrastructure developer Malaysian Resources Corporation Berhad (MRCB).
It paid a reported $7.25 million for the 1743sq m site and its 26-unit motel, which opened in 1969 and will be demolished to make way for MRCB’s to-be-revealed tower plans.
The site comes with approval 133 apartments over 14 levels.
MRCB had enlisted Plus Architecture to create a design “that will take advantage of expansive Broadwater views and deliver a collection of apartments largely comprising one and two-bedroom apartments”, the developer said in a statement.
“Residents will also have access to a range of resort-style amenities including a recreation deck, pool, barbecue areas, sauna and gymnasium,” it said.
The site is near the Broadwater Parklands light rail station as well as the Broadwater and its popular parklands and the Australia Fair retail centre.
Neighbours include Harry Triguboff’s Meriton Sundale Apartments and its associated retail precinct.
The site was marketed by Ray White Commercial Gold Coast’s Brad Merkur.
MRCB expects to launch its new Southport project early next year.
