Futuristic plans for Sydney Film School have gained approval from the City of Sydney planning committee to update its campus at Green Square.
The plans were for a golden triangle-shaped, six-storey campus to accommodate the film school alongside an independent school designed by Plus Architecture.
The project gained planning approval from the committee in June so it could be submitted to the NSW minister for planning for a gateway determination.
The International Screen Academy Property Pty Ltd owned the two lots with a combined 4611sq m at 244-258 Young Street, Waterloo.
The independent school component would support 800 students from kindergarten to Year 12 across 10,608 square metres.
An additional 2395sq m film school, ground-floor cafe, 60 carparking spaces and a basketball court on level 5 were included in the plans.
The Ethos Urban report showed the school-aged population in the region was expected to grow 76 per cent in 10 years and this facility responded to a deficiency in school place supply and choice.
“Subject to planning, the school could be operational by the start of the 2028 or 2029 school year,” the report said.
The application fits in with the contemporary designs of new developments in the area, including Woolworths Waterloo and the Danks Street South Precinct.
Sydney’s $8-billion Green Square urban renewal project has gained other modern new schools pushing the boundaries of design.
This included BVN’s day-to-night Green Square primary school design unveiled in July 2021.
Outside of this region, Woods Bagot created a colourful design for a new high school in Sydney Olympic Park this same year.
