As we close out another year at The Urban Developer, we’re celebrating with the release of our new website.
When we originally launched TUD in 2014, we did what most startups do – we scraped together the best we could with the resources we had.
In the case of the website, we designed it ourselves and engaged a local web developer to build out the platform. Total cost: $6,000 + GST!
Three years later, we have evolved that website into Australia’s largest online community of property and urban development professionals with an integrated business that spans media, events, education, products and technology. It’s been a wild ride!
As our audience has grown, so too have the demands on our website, so earlier this year we bit the bullet and began designing a new custom website that we’re now delighted to launch.
It is with great pleasure that we introduce this to you, our trusted readers and supporters.
From both a design and technology perspective, the starting point was you – our community.
As fastidious consumers of TUD ourselves, we had a pretty good sense of what was important, but we didn’t take that for granted.
Through audience surveys, user heat-mapping and detailed analytics, we let the data inform our sense of what our audience wants and needs.
Our priorities for Website 2.0 were as follows:
Beautiful – we wanted a clean, simple and visual website that was inspired by both traditional news mastheads and sleek digital design. We hope you like it as much as we do!
Globalised – we have developed intelligent algorithms that will localise your content based on your home city, providing the best of national and global content. Select your city on the homepage and hit go!
Segmented – we have expanded our “sections” within the navigation panels to help you find what you’re looking for. We understand that many people use TUD for research, so we hope this makes it easier to find and share content.
Quick – you’ll notice that the website is substantially quicker. Whilst this is a game of milliseconds, it makes all the difference to the overall user experience.
Personalised – you can now login to TUD and establish your email preferences, along with bookmarking your favourite articles. This is our first step towards allowing our audience to personalise the platform.
Authentic advertising – we have also refined the placement of display advertising and sponsored content to ensure that our audience authentically engages with our partners, and our partners can optimise their campaigns with our audience.
Over 2018, we’re very excited to be rolling out a suite of new products and features.
Events – our 2018 Event Program is well-advanced and we will be hosting information series, workshops, conferences and social events across Australia.
Education – in partnership with Applied Property Development Institute (APDI), we have launched an education program for the industry. This will be supported by a series of practical workshops and online courses.
Industry Directory – we will be launching our much anticipated Industry Directory (ID) which will bring together clients, service providers and product suppliers in a powerful database that will facilitate new business across the industry.
Jobs Board – your search for the dream job may soon be over with the release of our jobs board in 2018. The new portal will provide employers with an opportunity to find great talent and prospective employees the impetus to make their next big move.
CityShape – the BETA version of CityShape, our big-data software product for the property industry, is nearing completion. We’re excited to be releasing the first version to the market in early 2018.
CityShapers’ Podcast Series – we have now recorded our first series of podcasts with CityShapers from across Australia’s property sector. We look forward to releasing this in early 2018.
Beyond all of this, we’re pumped to announce that we will be expanding across the Tasman to New Zealand in 2018.
We have always aspired to build a global network and New Zealand is our first major step across international waters!
On behalf of all of our team at The Urban Developer, we’d like to say thank you for your support and loyalty over the year.
We’d also like to acknowledge our team – each and every one of them – for being instrumental in the delivery of our mission. They have worked incredibly hard behind the scenes and deserve every credit.
To our commercial partners, thank you again for your ongoing support. Without your contribution, we would simply not exist.
And to you, our community, our eternal thanks for clicking, reading, sharing, commenting, attending, drinking, eating and contributing to the TUD world.
We look forward to a bigger and better 2018!
