Australia’s Own Sustainable Steel: A Local Innovation Story

Australia’s steel industry has a long history of innovation, of driving growth and change, both domestically and internationally.

For more than 100 years, InfraBuild has been a key part of that narrative, creating high-quality steel right here in Australia.

With their new product range, they’ve got their eyes set on a new frontier of change that has the potential to make a difference on a global scale.

SENSE Solutions from InfraBuild is a range of Australian-made sustainable steel, designed to facilitate decarbonisation across the construction industry.

In creating a locally designed and manufactured product, InfraBuild is creating sustainable value by cultivating local talent and helping customers overcome compliance and risk hurdles.

Leading local talent

Inspiring design sits at the heart of the SENSE Solutions range.

SENSE 600, InfraBuild’s range of lower-embodied carbon reinforcing steel, uses up to 16.7 per cent less raw material and is not only made from 100 per cent scrap metal, but it’s able to achieve the same load capacity as their standard 500N bars.

This means up to a 35 per cent lower embodied carbon solution when used in place of standard 500N reinforcing steel.

It’s the unique bar design that makes all the difference and it’s their investment in research and Australian talent that made it all possible.

Examples of Sustainable Building Steel from InfraBuild.

Sustainable steel

Through their industry insights and leveraging collaborations with Australian academic powerhouses such as Monash University and UNSW, InfraBuild developed a sustainable product that addressed the central tensions of adopting sustainable steel solutions.

They recognised that for a lower embodied carbon steel to become the norm, it needed to be the easy choice across all construction industry stakeholders.

That’s why the SENSE Solutions range can be an alternate solution to their equivalent grade 500N product into existing designs without disrupting the processes of designers and engineers.

They can use the same software, the same steps, and the same goes for steel processors, fixers, and builders: it’s the same process with a new solution, a lower-embodied carbon steel result.

Australian assurance

Local production also uncomplicates transport, offering further opportunities for carbon reduction.

Choosing a local option can facilitate smooth, on-time delivery, minimising the likelihood of port or customs disruptions and help keep project timelines intact.

But this isn’t the only assurance choosing a locally produced steel can offer.

Quality and safety have long been hallmarks of Australian-made building materials.

Example of InfraBuild's more Sustainable Australian Construction Steel.

Minimising certification

In its century of operation, InfraBuild has played a strong role in this through a relentless pursuit of excellence and improvement.

The SENSE Solutions product range is a clear extension of that.

InfraBuild also recognised the need for minimising certification and safety challenges as a part of their product development process.

SENSE 600 is compliant for design to AS 3600:2018, and manufactured to AS/NZS 4671: 2019.

It’s also CodeMark certified across certain applications, making substitution simple.

This kind of assurance puts safety and sustainability in a perfect partnership—something InfraBuild sought to achieve from the outset.

Rising urgency

By leading the way in local sustainability, InfraBuild is ensuring that the Australian construction industry responds to rising urgency on climate action.

Through their innovative, easy-to-adopt solutions, they’re helping support the next stage of sustainable growth for Australia’s built environment.
