Mirvac is readying the bulldozers at Brisbane’s Toombul Shopping Centre after winning approval for demolition on the site.
The space is being prepared for the Toombul Renewal precinct with the masterplan scheduled and demolition expected to begin by the end of the year.
The demolition is expected take about 12 months to complete across the 99,850sq m site at 1015 Sandgate Road, Nundah, on Brisbane’s northside.
The front entrance of the centre and bus interchange are to be retained but all remaining structures will be removed.
The majority of public submissions on the application were in support, requesting the redevelopment “get crackin” but be mindful of noise and traffic.
The main considerations on the site would be flood mitigation, the elevated Brisbane Airport Rail Link line and public transport connectivity.
According to the application, there will be the “creation of a temporary park prior to exercising a future development approval for the redevelopment of the site”.
“As such, the proposal facilitates the ongoing process of re-establishing a range of centre activities within the Toombul major centre.”
The landscaping plans for the site showed native planting, lawns and a small park on the boundaries of the property.
Mirvac spent about $233 million to buy Toombul Shopping Centre in 2016 and outlaid a further $35 million for upgrades in 2019 before floodwaters swept through the centre in February 2022.
The centre was deemed beyond repair, leaving more than 100 retail tenancies in limbo and leading to the announcement of plans to redevelop the site.
