Concept plans for a tower over a new Sydney Metro station have been approved.
Sydney Metro revealed the concept designs for the 31-storey, $171-million tower last year.
The transport agency said it was an “exciting opportunity to incorporate global best practice for placemaking and environmentally sustainable development”.
The project at 37-69 Union Street, Pyrmont, will have a gross floor area of 23,463sq m, of which 16,198sq m is allocated for residential, with about 160 apartments planned.
Sydney Metro intends to use the podium areas for commercial premises, including offices and retail, with residential in the tower above.
Parking will be available for 55 cars.
It will also comply with the Pyrmont Peninsula Place Strategy and the City of Sydney Affordable Housing Program, with 3 per cent of the proposal’s gross floor area allocated to affordable housing.
During the public exhibition period of the project, 32 submissions were received, of which 16 objected to the proposal.
In approving the project last month, the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces said the project would provide additional employment and residential space in a highly accessible location.
The future building form within the concept envelope will be subject to detailed design development and review process.
The new Pyrmont Station is under construction and is expected to be complete by December 2028, according to the contract outline on the Australia New Zealand Infrastructure Pipeline site.
It is part of the Sydney Metro West line, with stations at Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Five Dock.
Nearby, Landream is moving ahead with its $900-million Pyrmont Place project, and planning controls for the area are under review, which may unlock 4000 more homes there and in neighbouring Ultimo.
